Many couples who have problems with conception feel isolated – like they’re the only ones dealing with difficulty getting pregnant. In fact, infertility is surprisingly common. Studies show about 10 percent of couples have problems getting pregnant. Studies also show about a third of all infertility issues are related to the female partner, about a third are related to the male partner, and the remaining third have unknown causes. The good news: In nearly all cases, there are effective treatment options that can help couples overcome or reverse infertility so they can get pregnant and start or expand their families.
State-of-the-Art Fertility Treatment in NYC
At New York Reproductive Wellness, we offer individualized fertility treatments based on each couple’s unique needs to ensure the best possible chance of getting pregnant. Treatment starts with a comprehensive fertility evaluation to identify the underlying cause of infertility, followed by a consultation to discuss the most appropriate treatment options and what they involve. Some of the most common treatment options are ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Ovulation induction uses medications delivered by pills or injections to help stimulate the ovaries to release eggs so they can be fertilized. Ovulation-related problems are one of the most common causes of infertility in women, including women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and women who have other hormonal imbalances. Ovulation induction treatment works by triggering the release of eggs from the ovaries or by enabling the eggs to mature before they’re released for fertilization. Most treatments take about five days to complete, but some women may require an additional course of therapy in order for it to be effective. Ovulation takes place shortly after treatment in most cases. Ovulation induction can be used to help women conceive on their own or it may be used to increase egg production in women who plan to undergo IUI or IVF.
During IUI, sperm from the male partner or donor is washed and concentrated, then placed directly inside the uterus, increasing the likelihood that at least one sperm will fertilize the egg. IUI is often used in women with endometriosis or thick cervical mucus, which can prevent sperm from reaching the uterus. It’s also commonly used in couples with unexplained infertility and in male factor infertility – specifically when sperm is undersized, poorly concentrated or have mobility issues. IUI is performed in our office during an outpatient procedure that takes just minutes to perform.
In IVF, eggs and sperm are collected and fertilized under carefully controlled conditions in a lab. Then the fertilized eggs are implanted directly into the uterus. IVF can use a couple own eggs and sperm or eggs and/or sperm from donors. IVF may be used in women with a fallopian tube or ovary disorders, as well as women with endometriosis, genetic disorders, unexplained fertility and other infertility causes. Like IUI, IVF treatment is performed in our office as outpatient procedures.
