Intrauterine (IUI) Insemination


New York Reproductive Wellness is dedicated to providing customized fertility treatments and are committed to only recommending necessary procedures that will give you a high chance of a successful pregnancy.  In many cases, in vitro fertilization may be unnecessary.  Starting with an IUI cycle may help to reduce the overall cost of fertility treatments.

 

Intrauterine insemination is a very common form of fertility treatment recommend for:

  • Male factor infertility (e.g. low sperm count or motility; sexual dysfunction; neurological problems)
  • Unexplained infertility
  • When donor sperm is needed for conception (e.g. single women, same LGBTQ couples)

Such cycles may be recommended on their own in natural cycles, or following the use of medications such as clomiphene citrate or injectable gonadotropins.  The IUI procedure starts by separating sperm from semen and suspending the sperm in a small volume of media, which is then drawn into a thin catheter. The catheter is placed through the cervix and into the uterine cavity. A syringe is then used to inject the washed sperm into the uterus around the time of ovulation.  IUIs allow for more sperm to reach the end of the fallopian tubes increasing the likelihood that sperm and egg(s) will meet to result in fertilization and conception. A pregnancy test is then performed 2 weeks later.

The maximum number of recommended IUI cycles will vary depending on age and diagnosis. Commonly, however, up to 3 IUI cycles are advocated before moving on to IVF.   IUI is a painless option for many NYRW patients who have good ovarian reserves.  Depending on your insurance coverage more cycles might be required prior to moving on to more aggressive fertility treatments.
