Can IVF be done without genetic testing?

Posted on May 15, 2018 by NYRW

Although genetic testing is controversial to some women, it is a practical step to take for women over 35 with a history of repeated miscarriages. Whether trying to get pregnant using [IVF (in vitro fertilization) ](<http://IVF http://nyreproductivewellness.com/in-vitro-fertilization/>)or IUI (intrauterine insemination) methods, women electing to undergo genetic testing have higher pregnancy success rates than women who chose to forego genetic testing. Since many miscarriages and failed implantations occur due to embryonic genetic abnormalities, genetic testing may be necessary to help women increase their chances of having a child.

IVF Can Be Done Without Genetic Testing

It is a woman's choice whether she wants genetic testing following conception via an IVF or IUI procedure. However, doctors recommend genetic testing for women who:

  • Are over 35 and using alternative reproductive technology to induce ovulation and get pregnant
  • Have had repeated in vitro fertilization failures
  • Have had more than three consecutive miscarriages
  • Couples or single women suspecting they may carry genes responsible for inherited diseases

What is Preimplantation Genetic Screening?

Intended to screen for chromosomal abnormalities, PGS is a commonly used genetic test for determining whether an embryo has the normal 23 pairs of chromosomes. PGS does not detect gene abnormalities indicative of genetic diseases. Embryos found to have chromosomal abnormalities would therefore not be chosen for implantation.

What is Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis?

This kind of genetic screening (PGD) looks for genetic diseases (cystic fibrosis, certain forms of cancer) that could potentially emerge in embryos as they develop into children and adults. If PGD detects a genetic disease, this does not mean the baby will inevitably be diagnosed with the disease. It simply means genes are present that carry indicators for the disease.
