Why Choose In-Vitro Fertilization?

Posted on September 15, 2016 by MD

Conceiving a child can be a struggle for some couples, who may eventually turn to a technique like in-vitro fertilization (IVF). One of a number of assisted reproductive technology (ART) options, IVF can make a huge difference in a couple's ability to conceive. Here's what New York Reproductive Wellness, a leading fertility clinic in NYC, wants you to know about IVF.

All About In-Vitro Fertilization

In-vitro (literally, “in glass”) fertilization is the technical term for a process that involves combining fertile eggs with sperm outside the body. Babies conceived by this method were once known as test tube babies, although a culture tube is actually the container used. Fertility medications are prescribed to stimulate the production of eggs. Multiple eggs are desirable, as the in-vitro process is not successful with all eggs. During a minor surgical procedure, the eggs are removed with a hollow needle and combined with sperm provided by the man. In some cases, a single sperm may be injected into an individual egg. Once fertilization and cell development have been confirmed (usually about three to five days), the embryos are transferred into the woman’s uterus. The embryos implant themselves into the uterus and the pregnancy proceeds as it would have with biological conception.

In-Vitro Fertilization – the Solution to a Problem

IVF provides a solution for couples in many situations and can resolve conception issues related to either male or female fertility problems. For example, IVF can be used if the male partner has decreased sperm count or low sperm motility. In women, IVF is used when the woman has blocked or damaged fallopian tubes or has had the tubes tied or removed (as long as the ovaries are still functioning. It can also be used in women who have premature ovarian failure, ovulation disorders and uterine fibroids. IVF also offers the option to conceive a child while preventing the chance that the baby will inherit a genetic disorder from either parent.

Although expensive, IVF can produce a successful pregnancy. According to the American Pregnancy Association, pregnancy rates range from 13 to 43 percent and are dependent on factors like a woman’s age and overall health. Although there are other fertility clinics in New York City, New York Reproductive Wellness is unique in that it focuses on natural approaches whenever possible while still offering state of the art, high technology solutions.
