What are the chances of getting pregnant with IVF?

Posted on March 26, 2018 by NYRW

In-vitro fertilization, which is also known as IVF, is a procedure offered to couples who aren't able to conceive on their own or using less invasive techniques. Thanks to advances in technology, the chances of getting pregnant with IVF are quite high. However, your individual chances of conceiving with IVF depend on the specifics of your situation.

What Is In-Vitro?

In-vitro fertilization is a procedure in which the egg and sperm are joined outside of the body, allowed to mature for a while and then placed back in the uterus for implantation. IVF is often recommended when other options, such as ovulation induction and/or intrauterine insemination, have not worked. Some of the conditions that may warrant treatment with IVF include male factor infertility, pelvic scarring, blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis or unexplained infertility. In some cases, IVF may be recommended as the first course if treatment if the doctor believes that other methods will not be successful.

What Are the Chances of Getting Pregnant with IVF?

IVF is often more successful than other methods of assisted reproduction. In general, the odds of a live birth with IVF ranges from 30 to 50 percent. However, your individual chances may be different. For example, IVF success rates are higher for younger women and older women using younger eggs. IVF success rates also vary based on the type of fertility problem you have, lifestyle factors and the quality of the sperm used. An experienced reproductive specialist can give you more information about your specific chances of conceiving after performing an exam, reviewing your medical history and/or ordering tests.
