Choices, Choices – Fertility Treatment Options

Posted on August 18, 2016 by MD

When a couple has trouble trying to conceive, it's not the end of their hopes for a child. Modern medicine has many fertility treatment options, and New York Reproductive Wellness wants to make sure you know about them. We are unique among fertility clinics in New York City in that we focus on a natural approach wherever possible and use them in combination with high technology methods.

Fertility Issues

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) is another term for medical treatments to correct or resolve fertility problems. Although some cases of infertility can’t be corrected, ART can help many couples. Sometimes something as simple as timing intercourse can result in a successful pregnancy. Among the factors that make a difference are the primary reason or reasons for the infertility, the age of both partners, how long the individual has had a fertility problem, other health issues and the patient’s or couple’s personal preferences.

Treatment for Men

Male infertility can be the result of lifestyle issues, low sperm production or physical factors like impotence. Improving lifestyle factors can help many men who have suboptimal fertility. Some medications may have side effects that decrease fertility or sexual functioning, while a man who has previously had a vasectomy or has a condition called a varicocele (similar to a varicose vein inside the scrotum) may need surgical correction. If the man still produces healthy sperm but is impotent or sperm counts are low, sperm retrieval can help.

Treatment for Women

Treating infertility in a woman can be a complex issue. In addition to menstrual and ovulation irregularities, women may have medical conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome or endometriosis. Some women need more than one kind of treatment in order to conceive. Women who have ovulation disorders – like not consistently releasing an egg – may respond to fertility medications. Intrauterine insemination can place healthy sperm in the woman’s uterus to coincide with her normal ovulation. If the woman has problems like uterine scarring or endometrial polyps, surgery may be used to help restore fertility.

Assisted Reproductive Technology

In-vitro fertilization is probably the best-known and most common ART technique. Mature eggs from the woman are fertilized with the man’s sperm in a lab and then placed in the woman’s uterus after they begin to develop. This is also an option with egg donation, in which eggs from another woman are fertilized with the male partner’s sperm and then inserted into the female partner’s uterus. The woman carries the baby to term as she would her own biological child. In-vitro fertilization can also be used for a surrogate pregnancy, in which the baby is carried to term by another woman.

Many couples can achieve a successful pregnancy – they just need a little help. At New York Reproductive Wellness, the leading New York fertility clinic, we have many possible solutions for both men and women. Contact us today for a consultation.
