Artificial Insemination: Less Invasive, More Affordable Fertility Treatment

Posted on July 6, 2017 by NYRW

Artificial insemination is a popular method to help infertile women or couples to add to their family. Determining whether artificial insemination is the right fertility solution for you, or opting for another fertility treatment entirely, requires expert advice. Your fertility specialist can perform this procedure by inserting sperm into the uterus (called IUI, or intrauterine insemination), which is the most common form of artificial insemination. Here are the basics to help you make a wise fertility treatment choice.

Who Can Benefit from Artificial Insemination in NY?
Any of the following fertility issues can prevent conception and females may respond well to being artificially inseminated:

  • Men with low sperm count.
  • Men with low sperm motility (movement).
  • Women with abnormal reproductive anatomy.
  • Women with endometriosis.
  • Women with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).
  • Women with thicker cervical mucus.
  • Couples with an unknown infertility problem.

What to Expect from Insemination

Your fertility doctor will make sure you are ovulating before doing your artificial insemination. (You may receive fertility drugs in advance to prompt the release of multiple eggs.) An ultrasound exam, ovulation tracking kit or blood tests can confirm ovulation. You and your partner should abstain from sex for a few days prior to insemination, to help ensure a high sperm count. The sperm sample is collected in a room in our Long Island fertility clinic or at home, if you reside close by the clinic. Sperm will be washed within an hour of collection.

The washing procedure clarifies or separates the best, most actively mobile, sperm using a centrifuge and a chemical process. The washed sperm are inserted into your uterus, safely past the vagina and cervix. The procedure is quick and typically pain free. You may experience cramps and bleed slightly. You will be asked to rest for about half an hour so the sperm can begin making their way to the Fallopian tubes and your egg. If you don’t conceive within about three rounds of artificial insemination, your doctor may recommend moving on to IVF (In VItro Fertilization).
